The Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic is widely regarded as one of the most expensive, unusual and enigmatic cars.
The Bugatti 57SC Atlantic was first presented to the public at the 1935 Paris exhibition as a prototype under the name ‘Aerolithe’. In 1936 the car was put into small series production and until 1939 four units were produced.
The supercar is based on the Bugatti Type 57 platform. The front suspension is independent with a multilever construction.
The car’s body consists of an aluminium alloy as well as magnesium, making it extremely lightweight. The body components are riveted together because the complex alloy makes welding impossible due to its high flammability. In order to achieve effective speed figures, the aerodynamics of the body was seriously studied. This is why the body has been given such a streamlined shape.
Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic owners:
- Bugatti Chassis No. 57374 – was ordered by Lord Rothschild. According to the order, the car was light blue with a dark blue interior. The car’s second owner was Bob Oliver of Los Angeles. In 1971, Peter D. Williamson purchased the Atlantic at auction for $59,000.
- Atlantic chassis No 57473 was sold to an elderly French couple who returned it to the factory in 1937 and the car remained in the factory until 1939. Thereafter, the Atlantic changed many owners and in 1955 was hit by a train at a railway crossing, killing the car’s owner Mr Rene Chatard and his companion. The mangled car remained in the police station yard for 10 years. In 1965 it was bought back by Paul André Berson, who spent more than ten years restoring the wrecked Atlantic. The restoration was finally completed under the new owner, Nicolas Seydoux.
- The last of the Atlantics with chassis number 57491 was purchased by Mr R.B. Pope from London in 1939. In the sixties the car was owned by the famous writer Barry Price, and since 1988 by the New York fashion designer Ralph Lauren.
